Training,
Supervision and Therapy for Marriage and Family Therapy Interns
The State of California requires therapists in training to complete
3,000 hours of supervised counseling experience. This includes
face-to-face counseling sessions, supervisory sessions, trainings,
and personal therapy. For 15 years, I supervised from 6-16 interns
and trainees in a group counseling program that I developed for
adolescents in schools, and I currently work with interns in my
private practice. I was an instructor for an MFT exam prep seminar
for 15 years and have trained hundreds of interns studying for
their licensing exams. I am a highly praised and respected supervisor
(previous interns are available to discuss their experiences).
Pre-requisites for interning with Dr. Jaffe:
• Have completed between 1500-2000 hours in other settings
where you have addressed a variety of clinical issues
• Ideally have interests or expertise that supplement those
already offered in this office
• Have had at least one year of your own therapy, and preferably
continue to see a therapist while doing your internship
• Have an interest in learning the management aspects of
private practice, including marketing, fee-setting,
insurance billing, etc.
• Submit a letter of interest and resume
I also provide individual therapy for trainees and interns at
reasonable fees. In addition, I have helped many wonderful clinicians
who are terrible test-takers … especially those who have
test anxiety that gets in the way of succeeding on the licensing
exam. Contact me for more information about therapy and mental
preparation for exams.
One of the most difficult challenges for therapists-in-training
is allowing your clients to move at their own pace, not at yours.
To understand the importance of this learning, you might find
the story of The Caterpillar
to be informative.
I am pleased to have a recently published article written especially
for trainees and interns. I think you will find Psychotherapy:
A Mystery Puzzle in Progress helpful in developing your counseling
skills. The article appears in the March/April 2005 issue of The
Therapist, the publication of CAMFT (California Association
of Marriage and Family Therapists).
WHAT TRAINEES AND INTERNS SAY ABOUT WORKING WITH DR.
J:
Dr. Jaffe was very supportive and provided me with excellent
supervision and additional training to supplement my formal education
that has proven to be invaluable in my career. Her assistance
with understanding group dynamics, applying diagnostic criteria,
treatment planning, and note writing provided the foundation required
to build a successful career.

When someone decides to write Chicken Soup for the MFT Intern
Soul, at least one chapter needs to be dedicated to Dr. Jaelline
Jaffe. With her knowledge of the latest theories of trauma resolution,
combined with her empathy and passion for helping kids, Jaelline
is the kind of clinical supervisor that any therapist-in-training
would treasure.

I found the experience to be extremely worthwhile … As
a mentor Dr. Jaffe showed compassion and patience … As a
supervisor, she was resourceful and conducted informative group
supervision sessions with opportunities for case presentations
and with her guidance developed them into treatment plans. I highly
recommend Dr, Jaffe's trainee and intern program.
